Professional Jamaicans for Jamaica, Inc. (PJFJ) recognizes that many Jamaican students from poor communities struggle every year to secure the necessary finances, in order to obtain a Bachelor’s degree at one of our universities. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that PJFJ reaffirms its commitment to education by continuing the annual university essay competition, and award The Horace A. Daley and Leopold E. Gordon Scholarship.

This scholarship is valued up to $300,000 JMD and will be awarded to a first-year university student with the best essay and who demonstrates financial need.

ESSAY TOPIC
In recent years there have been more attention and discussions about climate change, global warming and sustainability. What are some of the environmental challenges in Jamaica? How would you rank the impact they have on the country? What changes would you recommend to the Energy Minister of Jamaica? How will you change your behavior at home, university and/or in your neighborhood to help make a difference?

 

  • Essays should be between 1,200 to 2,000 words.
  • Essays will be judged based on content, relevance, grammar, spelling and presentation.
  • Only one entry per student.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  • Two (2) Letters of Recommendation from former teachers. The letters should explain why you deserve this scholarship; and should also highlight your strengths, areas for improvement, accomplishments and leadership ability.
  • Certified copy of your Acceptance Letter from the university where you will further your education.
  • Certified copy of your CXC, GCE O’Level and/or CAPE Examinations Results.
  • Certified copies of your last two (2) end-of-year school Reports/Transcripts.

The scholarship will be presented at our Annual Awards Banquet in Kingston, Jamaica. Finalist will receive further correspondence from the Scholarship Selection Committee
